Summarization of Content

Catalogue for exhibition "Xu Bing in Berlin' by Xu Bing held at the Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst, Berlin, Germany, May 27 - August 1, 2004.

Over nearly two decades, Xu Bing has been addressing one of the fundamental issues in a globalized world: the problem of communication. Faced with his system of written characters without meaning, even the wise doubt their own wisdom, while the unknowing might aspire to understand. Seeing a form of script that looks illegible, but in reality is a Latin system of writing camoflagued as Chinese characters, leads us to doubt our own faculties of perception. Landscapes dissolve into words.

Xu Bing brings together the opposites of the West and the East, and in doing so makes contemporary ideas manifest with traditional materials. His work both portrays and accomplishes transcendence of its social origin, intellectual background, and time.
