Xu Bing is a Chinese installation artist, based in Beijing and New York, who has exhibited internationally.

He was born in 1995 in Chongqing, China. He studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing earning his BA in 1981 and his MFA in 1987. He move to the US in 1990 and return to China in 2007. He was the vice president of CAFA, 2008-2014 and later became a professor and director of the Academic Committee. In 2015 he was appointed an A.D White Professor-at Large at Cornell University. His work has been shown around the world including galleries in USA, UK, Spain, Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, and Germany. He has also taken part in international exhibitions including the Venice Biennales. He has received various awards for his work including a MacArthur Fellowship in 1999; the 14th Fukuoka Asian Culture Award, 2003; the Artes Mundi Prize, 2004; and the 2014 Department of State-Medal of Arts.

He held a solo exhibition at the Chinese Art Centre in 2003 which was the opening exhibition of the Thomas Street venue. A book launch was held at the Centre in 2016 to launch a special edition of his publication  'Book from the Ground'  to mark the 30th anniversary of the Centre.
