Summarization of Content

Exhibition catalogue for the solo exhibition Comfort Terrace: exhibition of paintings and videos by Bouie Choi Yuk-Chen by Grotto Fine  Art, Hong Kong, 2011 Mar 3 - Mar 26.

The title of the exhibition referred to a street terrace in Hong Kong. The name embodies health and prosperity, two most aspired values in Chinese society. Bouie Choi's series of paintings and videos centers specifically on the act of self-preservation and indulgence. Self-preservation is an act of preventing bad fortune. As an observant of today's competitive world. Choi creates in her paintings pyschological warfare that resembles battles of the minds. While much of the act of blessing is about protection and luck, it indirectly hinges on how to outsmart one's opponent. As such, one finds a darker, more sarcastic narrative that underlies the playful facade of Choi's paintings.
