History

Margaret Tran was an UK-based artist who used her residency at the Centre to develop and research a performance project where the artist became the 'Ultimate Chinese Culture Fanatic' (UCCF). The project, seen by the artist as a "absurd" take-on and exploration of the issue of stereotyping, would develop the persona of the UCCF, an entity existing between the "non-Chinese Westerner - enamoured with all things Chinese" and the "Chinese patriot, archly preaching the virtues of their native land'.

The artist developed the persona in a continual performance piece which took place between 22nd June - 6th July, by asking visitors to contribute to the UCCF manifesto, a document outlining the qualities of the Ultimate Chinese Culture Fanatic.

Due to another artists pulling out of a Whisper residency, Margaret Tran returned to for a second residency in October 2005. The artist completed their project and produced a video piece documenting her performance. A second open studio event was held on 20th October 2005.

The residency was funded by the Creative Diversity : Greater Manchester (CD:GM) project.
