History

Eastman Cheng is a Hong Kong artist who was curious about how objects are used and consumed by Society.
During her residency, Eastman has observed, analysed, and created ‘objects’ from the perspective of a foreigner. The objects created act as a record of Eastman’s personal impressions of the city of Manchester and British culture, particularly focusing on local architecture. The artist worked with local practitioners to learn new skills to help develop the objects.
The artist held the open studio Gymnasium between 19-21 August to present work developed during her residency.

The artist also ran a series of workshops, in association with the Manchester Art Gallery, as part of a trailblazer project for the Asia Triennial Manchester 2011. The artist worked with the NEESA well-women’s group to develop new works which were shown at the Centre as part of a First Step exhibition later in 2010.
