History
Residency which resulted from the Centre's ongoing relationship with 501 ArtSpace. The residency was also programmed as part of the first Asia Triennial Manchester (ATM08) and the CHINA NOW 2008 festival.
Mao Yan Yang was a painter based at 501 Artspace in Chongqing, whose practice challenged the reliability of the news and brought into question the role media plays in shaping our sense of the world. Using stock images as inspiration, the artist's works presented a different slant on 20th century history and its relation to contemporary China.
Inspired by the ATM’s theme of protest, the artist used his residency at the Centre to continued his exploration of the media's depictions of events. This work was presented in an open studio held between 20th April - 25th April.
