History

US-based artist, Stella Lai grew up in Cheung Chau island southwest of Hong Kong Island. Her artwork explored issues related to memory, identity and globalisation through the creation of alter egos within her work.

During her residency at the Centre, she intended to observe the character of émigré Chinese culture in Manchester. By integrating herself in to the Chinese community, she hoped to gain a greater cultural understanding. Her work was informed by a combination of traditional Chinese culture and British influence she discovered in Manchester's China Town. She also delivered an art workshop at Salford Foyer.

The results of her work were shown in her open studio from 22nd September. She also presented a talk about her practice, (14th July) and held opened her studio during the preview of the Reassurance exhibition, (28th July).
