Tokyo Still Life / Nobuyoshi Araki: Edited by Jonathan Watkins; Designed by Herman Lelie

Summarization of Content

Exhibition catalogue for the exhibition by Nobuyoshi Araki 'Tokyo Still Life' at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham between 30th May - 8th July 2001, curated by Jonathan Watkins and Kaye Winwood.

The exhibition depicted artist's unique vision through an extraordinary diversity of images. Araki's work confronts the viewer with a mixture of pleasure, fascination and alarm. In the dialogues between images, in his daunting numbers of colliding imagery, either on the page or displayed on actual walls, there is a constant flipping from carefully posed and constructed theatrically to snapshot immediacy and spontaneity, all presented with dream-like jumps from one kind of focus to another. Here we find private fantasies acted out, voyeuristic pornographic scenarios, photo-album mementoes, games with plastic dinosaurs, flowers, portraits, cityscapes, nudes, details.
