Summarization of Content

The catalogue has been published in conjunction with the solo show of  Lu Chunsheng The Materialists are All Asleep, curated by Ulrich Obrist organised by the Red Mansion Foundation in London in 2008.

This major retrospective exhibition of Lu Chunsheng's work is the first of its kind to feature cross-media and a variety of his earlier styles and art forms. It comprises six video-films, more than thirty photographs and a number of drawings as well as an installation. His work speaks of a feeling of alienation and melancholy for a China that is rapidly disappearing. He approaches the world with humour and a teasing penchant for absurdity. However, the comedy serves to disguise a problem with accepting reality; how to straddle the inner and the outer world, the past and the present.
