Summarization of Content

Exhibition catalogue for the solo show 3X3X6 Shu Lea Cheang: Taiwan in Venice by Shu Lea Cheang which was held in the Taiwanese Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale between 2019 May 11 - 2019 Aug 27.

The work was inspired by the history of the venue, Palazzo delle Prigioni, which has been a prison in the 16th century. The title refers to the modern standardise architecture of a prison cell,  3 square metres constantly monitored by 6 cameras. The work examined the realities of a prison cell, constructed both physically and by the presence of digital surveillance mechanisms.

The show featured ten examples of historical and contemporary case studied of individuals who have been incarcerated or outcasted due to reasons related to gender variance, sexual preference, or racial differences. The work examined how visual and legal hegemonies are constructed over time and how they rationalise sex, gender and race as a results.

The publication also features critical essays by Paul Preciado, Matthew Fuller, Dean Spade, and Jackie Wang on Cheang’s work.
