Summarization of Content

Exhibition catalogue published for the solo show: Forest of Stone Steles, Retranslation & Rewriting of Tang Poetry by Wenda Gu held at the OCT Contemporary Art Terminal of He Xiang Ning Art Museum (OCAT), Shenzhen in 2005.

Conceived in 1993, Forest of Stone Steles, Retranslation & Rewriting of Tang Poetry was a large scale  installation by Gu Wenda which incorporated the Chinese-English and English-Chinese translations of fifty Tang poems. By using imprecise translations and retranslations of the same texts, the artist demonstrated un-translatability of language across cultures. The work has been shown at several venues, but the 2005 exhibition was the first time the entire series had been displayed together.

The publication includes essays by scholars as well as documentation of the process of making the work, texts from the steles and Gu's script.
