Summarization of Content

DVD containing documentation of two works by Ming Wong: Learn German with Petra von Kant (2007) and Eat Fear (2008) which were inspired by German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

Learn German with Petra von Kant (2007) (duration 10 mins) saw Ming Wong learning to speak and act like a German by emulating the Margit Carstensen in the role of fashion designer Petra von Kant in Rainer Werner Fassbinder´s 1972 film Die bitteren Tränen der Petra von Kant (The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant). The work was created shortly before the artist's move to Germany and was "an exercise for a self-designed “integration course” in Germany".

Eat Fear (2008) (duration 27 mins) was created during Ming Wong's residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien. Inspired by the Turkish community in Berlin, the film was a reconstruction of Rainer Werner  Fassbinder movie, Angst essen Seele auf [Fear Eats the Soul] (1973), which looks at a romance that develops between an elderly German women and a Moroccan migrant worker in Germany after the 2nd World War and the discrimination they faced. In Ming Wong's work, the artist plays all the roles in the story, speaking in an approximate German. Playing the roles in an unfamiliar language, the artist turns each of the figures into an 'other' and reflects on identity and alterity.
