Lim Tzay Chuen : Singapore at 51st Venice Biennale 2005 / Lim Tzay Chuen

Summarization of Content

Press Kit for the solo show by Lim Tzay-Chuen: MIKE presented in the Singapore Pavilion of the 51st La Biennale di Venezia in 2005, held at the Calle della Tana, Venice, Italy. The show was curated by Eugene Tan. Includes press release and informaiton on the artist.

Initially, Lim had attempted to transport the  80 tonne Merlion statue of Singapore to Venice as a comment on tourism, self-representation, and capitalism. The transportation of Singapore's iconic symbol of tourism, (nicknamed MIKE by the artist), was considered too impractical and costly by Singapore Government. Instead the artist produced an installation which addressed Lim negotiation with the Singapore authorities, including a collection of collectible printed materials creating in collaboration with design company H55 and placement of a signpost which read I wanted to bring Mike over.
