Book From the Ground / Xu Bing, MIT

Summarization of Content

Graphic novel composed entirely of symbols and icons produced by artist Xu Bing. Special edition produced for the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art's 30th anniversary.

Developed by the artist since 2003, the Book from the Ground project saw artist Xu Bing develop a language only using symbols drawn from the public sphere. The aim was to create a universal language which could be read by any reader in the contemporary world, regardless of their cultural or educational background. The resulting book could be published in any country without the need for translation.
