Summarization of Content

Exhibition catalogue for Qui Shi-hua's solo show at the Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland in 1999.

"At first glance, Qiu's landscape paintings actually offer the viewer very few points of orientation on the almost monochrome pictorial plane. Here and there some tufts of grass, and in the foggy distance, the edge of a forest. A vague suggestion of a horizon. No movement. Just the horizontals of the landscape and the verticals of the scanty vegetation. Colour appears mainly as a nuance of white, and is applied to the canvas or paper extremely thinly and sparsely. The light, which is always diffuse, bathes the landscape in an almost impenetrable mist."
