Chen Man is s one of the best-known female Chinese photographers of the 21st Century and is a leading fashion photographer in China. She has also done print advertising campaigns for several international companies, such as Adidas and Motorola.
Her work crosses the boundary between the commercial mainstream and pure art and features a duality drawing on ‘Chinese values for the essence, Western learning for the practical use’. She presents fantastical illusions, taking them far beyond the mere moment captured in conventionally shot photographs. Her approach is to take total control of the images she created to achieve the ultimate in beauty.
Born in Beijing, Chen Man graduated from the photography department of the design school under the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2005. She first came known in 2003 when she photographed a series of covers for Vision, a design and art magazine based in China.
Chen’s stunning, hyper-real images were shown at CFCCA in her first solo UK exhibition in 2012. The exhibition also was shown at the University of Leeds to mark the 50th anniversary of East Asian Studies at the University.
Chen’s work has been featured in a number of galleries and museums across the globe, including the China Design exhibition in 2008 at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. She has also had her largest photos on display at the Hotel Royal Monceau in Paris in an exhibit called Demolition Party. Her work has been on display at Fabien Fryns Fine Art gallery in Los Angeles, Hai Gallery in London, Gallery Joyart in Beijing, Galerie Loft in Paris, OOIBOTOS Gallery in Hong Kong, Galerie Maeght in Paris, and Today Arts Museum in Beijing.
