Dai Guanyu (戴光郁) is considered one of the leaders of the avant-garde scene in Sichuan. His practice incorporates traditional Chinese culture and history in his performances, paintings, installations to form powerful yet poetic symbolisms in his works.
Dai Guangyu was born in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China in 1955. He is a self taught artist and was trained in calligraphy, painting and literature from an early age.
He became of the leader of China's 1985 New Wave
movement and organised the first modern art exhibition in the Sichuan province, Red Yellow Blue – Young Artists of Sichuan
in 1986. He also participated in the landmark exhibition China Avant-Garde Exhibition
at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing in 1989. In the 1990s, the artist began to use performance to express himself artistically. It was during this time that he showed his penchant for ‘ink games’. From 1995, Dai Guangyu was also the leader of the Chengdu Public Performance Art movement.
His work has been shown in numerous biennale, triennials, performance art festivals and group and solo exhibitions in China and internationally. His works can be found in collections around the world including Guangdong Museum of Art, China' Kunst Museum, Germany; Art Alliance, Switzerland; and the Joan Lebold Cohen Collection, USA.
In 2005 he was one of the artist on the China Live
tour of the UK organised by the Chinese Arts Centre. He was also one of the artists who took part in the Vital Festival
