History

This set includes physical and born-digital records which have been brought together physically or intellectually to show the processes by which the Centre selected resident artists. Many born-digital records can be found elsewhere in the collection within the order they were originally transferred to the Archive.

From 2003-2006, the Centre's main residency scheme, 'Breathe' selected artists on a yearly basis for 3 month residencies. Open calls were published in the Spring of each each and a selection panel would make the final selection in the summer. Each round of residencies would usually start in November of each year.

From November 2006-November 2008, the Centre's 3 month residencies were either externally funded or were collaborations with other arts organisations. Often artists were pre-selected or each residency had its own selection process.  The Centre returned to the annual call for applications in Spring 2008 for its residencies between November 2008-November 2009.

The Centre also had shorter 'Whisper' residencies which were open to emerging UK-based artists and were closely linked to the Centre's artist development schemes. The artists selected between 2004-2006 were all based in north west England as part of the Creative Diversity: Greater Manchester (CD:GM)  project. Artists who took part in Whisper residencies between 2006-2008 were part of the Centre's Personal Artist Development (PAD) scheme. From 2008, the Whisper residencies were open to any emerging UK-based artist and were selected on a rolling basis.
