History

This set includes records which have been brought together physically or intellectually to show the processes by which the Centre selected resident artists. Many born-digital records can be found elsewhere in the collection within the order they were originally transferred to the Archive.

From 2003-2006, the Chinese Arts Centre published an open call each spring for applications from artists to take part in its Breathe‘ 3 month residencies.  A selection panel would meet each summer to review the applications and 3-4 artists were chosen to take up the residencies usually starting in the November on the same year. Due to changes in how the ‘Breathe’ residencies were funded, resident artists taking part in ‘Breathe’ residencies between November 2006-November 2008, were largely chosen by collaborators or were selected through individual open calls (such as the PRODUCTION residency).  The Centre returned to the annual call for applications for its residencies between November 2008.

Shorter ‘Whisper’ residencies were initially related to the Centre’s projects which provided career support for artists. Successful artists taking part in Whisper residencies between 2004-2006, were artist based in north west England and were invited to apply as part of the Creative Diversity: Greater Manchester (CD:GM) project. After the end of the project,  the residencies were open to artists who were candidates on the Personal Artist Development (PAD) scheme. From 2008 the Whisper residencies were open to any emerging UK-based artist and were selected on a rolling basis.

After the Centre was rebranded in 2013, residencies were no longer publicly referred to as ‘Breathe’ or ‘Whisper’, although the terminology remained internally.  The Centre no long held annual open calls from 2016. Instead open calls were held for individual residencies or the artists were chosen by partners of the Centre.
