History

A seminar to address whether a new vocabulary should be established to refer to artists of Chinese heritage. The debate was in response to the lack of representation of East Asia artists in schemes following the implementation of the Art Council's Cultural Diversity Action Plan and the Black Arts Development Fund.

Chaired by Sarah Champion of the Chinese Arts Centre, the seminar was held at the Place Theatre, London, with presentations by Susan Puisan Lok (artist), Charmaine Seet (artist), David Tse (artistic director of Yellow Earth Theatre), Professor Christopher Bannerman from Middlesex University, Nasseem Kahn from Ace, and Lois Kedian (programmer). The results of the seminar were published in a report to inform further debate and funding organisations.
