Summarization of Content

This catalogue was released in conjunction witnh C.X. Li's solo exhibition at Goedhuis Contemporary on 24 May - 8 Jun 2000.

One of the most exquisite traditions of Chinese art is the painting style gongbi, where the artist plays close attention to the form and structure of the object, carefully capturing it through the meticulous application of black ink outlines and coloured pigments for a finely rendered effect. C.X. Li has adopted this tradition into an expression that is both tinged with tradition and throroughly contemporary. Through careful detail and a palette suggestive of her subject and the moment, C.X. Li's works convey the archaic, timeless feeling associated with gongbi and the meticulously executed flower paintings of the past.
