Scope and Content

This catalogue was published in conjunction with "The Chinese: Photography and Video from China" exhibition at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in Wolfsburg, Germany from 9th October 2004 to 9th January 2005.

The nineteen artists present in this exhbition were chosen by the curator and her team on a trip to China, where they scouted Hangzhou, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai for photographers, filmmakers and video artists. The exhibition focuses on artists in their thirties and forties and who have taken up the subjects of Maoist China (Zhuang Hui, Zhou Hongxiang, Liu Zheng), the family (Song Yongping, Wang Jinsong, Yang Zhenzhong), the individual (Zhuang Hui, Liu Zheng, Yang Yong, Yang Fudong), urbanism (Ou Ning and Cao Fei, Xing Danwen, Xiang Liqing, Wang Jinsong), and the contrast of city and country (Weng Fen, Yang Fudong, Zheng Dasheng), to the cultural clash between the capitalist world of commodities and advertising and the socialist tradition (Wang Qingsong, Hong Hao).
