Scope and Content
DVD containing the black & White, separate sound, single-channel video installation 'Lingchi: Echoes of a Historical Photograph' by Chen Chieh-jen.
Created for the Taipei Biennale 2002, the work was inspired by a photograph by an unknown western photographer in the early 1900s of the execution of a man by Lingchi, also known as ‘death by a thousand cuts’, used in China until it was banned in 1905. The film set the scene of the execution mixed with images of the ruins of historical places, images of workers in electronic industry, and female workers disabled by accidents and occupational diseases in their hostels. It examines the relationships of power between the strong and weak under the dominance of World War I, when the power was first focused on globalisation.
